y the 1850's George and Martha Washington's estate Mount Vernon was beginning to crumble. The government declined to purchase it, insisting that it would not be proper to spend tax payers money.

The first  nationwide woman's organization in America) started a nationwide fund raising effort.
In 1858 John Washington agreed to sell it to the  Mount Vernon Ladies Association Association,  for 0,000 for 200 acres outbuildings and the mansion.a with a down-payment of ,000 to be paid off in 4 installments for 4 years on Feb 22  G.Washington's' birthday.
The Association held various Fund raising Fairs with crafts etc and Lectures etc.  around the country to help raise Money.
They raised the entire amount due in 18 months!!
